The Crossing A Harry Bosch Novel Michael Connelly Books

I've read almost all of Michael Connelly's books, especially the police procedural Detective Harry Bosch novels. Then he introduced us to another character, a "Lincoln Lawyer" Mickey Haller. I started to follow this character too. As it happens, the Bosch and Haller, who sit on opposite benches in the courtroom are half brothers. This novel is the first I've come across where the two well-drawn characters actually work together -- or I should say work on the same case. They may be brothers but they aren't friends and Bosch's opinion of lawyers is somewhere south of distaste. Plausible circumstance has them working on the same case for different reasons. The plot is well written, no red herrings, no BS and no brotherly love. It's good as both a police procedural (Bosch) and as a mini-courtroom drama (Haller).

The Crossing A Harry Bosch Novel Michael Connelly Books Reviews

As always, Connelly delivers another great installment in his Harry Bosch series—which doubles as an installment for his Mickey Haller series as well. We've seen the half-brothers cross paths before, but we've never seen them work together on a case, which is what happens here.

In The Burning Room, Bosch was forced out of the LAPD, and he hired his half-brother, Mickey, to sue them, which is continuing here, but without a mission or an income, Bosch seems lost. Mickey believes one of his clients has been framed for a brutal murder and asks Bosch to investigate. Bosch agrees to review the file, but not without a great deal of reluctance and trepidation. If he wins his lawsuit, how can he return to the LAPD after he has crossed to “the dark side”? What will his friends and brothers in blue think of him? What will his daughter say? He feels he is betraying everything he stands for...and yet, if the defendant really is innocent, that means the real killer is still free to strike again...

I always try to pace myself with Connelly novels, because I know it will be awhile before the next installment, however, once I get my greedy hands on his books, I find myself devouring them practically in one sitting, and it was no different this time. Oh well...
This is another story that you will not be able to put down until the end. It involves both Michael Haller and Harry Bosch working together to solve a murder.

Michael Haller's defense investigator, Cisco, is not working due to a serious car accident, where he was deliberately run off the road into on-coming traffic. This leaves Haller temporarily without an investigator.
Meanwhile, Harry Bosch has been forcibly retired from L.A. P. D. and is planning on catching up on some projects at home. Michael Haller approaches Harry Bosch to help him out as an investigator on his case, which he firmly believes his client is innocent of the charges against him. Harry said he will not cross over to the other side, no way, no how. Michael finally convinces Harry to help prove his client is innocent and to nail the real killer.

The Brass Verdict

Great read...

Haller has not been practicing law for a year due to being in rehab, which the book will tell you more about that incident. Haller gets a call from the head judge of the court to appear in chambers as soon as possible. When Haller arrives at the judge's chambers, he is told that a former colleague of his was killed last night, and the colleague had written in his will that his entire law practice was to be taken over by Michael Haller. Haller is truly stunned by this I formation but agrees he will do his best for his friend.

One of 30 clients that Haller inherited is a big time movie mogul that is accused of murdering his wife. This is where the story starts with many twist and turns that will keep you glued to the book until the end.
Bosch will be popping in and out throughout the story, and Haller will discover a secret about Bosch, which will be revealed at the end.

Once again Michael Connelly doesn't disappoint. An engrossing story of Harry Bosch, recently "retired" from the police department who, as a Private Investigator, takes a job from his half brother, Mickey Haller, the Lincoln Lawyer from Connelly's earlier book and renowned defense lawyer. It's Harry's first experience on "the other side of the table" and he is majorly conflicted. Connelly deftly moves Harry through any number of perilous situations as Harry comes up with the facts of the cases almost from thin air. What looked like a slam dunk for the prosecution suddenly was not. Along the way most of the witnesses are murdered to keep them quiet and Harry has a number of very close calls as well. This was a fun ride through a murder mystery. Though there is never much doubt about who done it, it's the ride that is important. The only thing that kept this from being 5 stars was the book slowed a bit in the middle. I would like to have given this 4½ stars.
Harry Bosch is at loose ends, having resigned from the LAPD as a result of the incident at the end of the previous novel. And he's suing the department for unfair suspension, employing his half brother Michael Haller as his lawyer. At the start of this novel, Haller asks Bosch to act as his investigator in an upcoming murder trial - Cisco, his usual investigator, was seriously injured in a motorbike crash - very much against Bosch's principles.

He agrees to look at the prosecution's case, no promises made, and immediately notices discrepancies and loose ends.

It's a great read. Five hundred pages never went so quickly. Fans of Michael Connelly will certainly have it on pre-order (customers in America and Canada will apparently get the bonus of 'the Brass Target' in the eBook when it's released in early November - assuming that they haven't already read it. I'm an Australian customer, so I got my copy a day ago).

I wonder whether this is 'it' for the series? Harry Bosch appears to be well and truly bumping up against mandatory retirement age for the police, regardless of whether his unfair suspension case succeeds or not. And he swears that he will never again work for 'the dark side' as he did in this one.
