Nine Minutes The Nine Minutes Trilogy Volume 1 Beth Flynn 9781500473631 Books

I am utterly mystified by the high ratings on this novel. Technically, it is fine...the grammatical structure is sound and there are next to no typos. The cover is awful--truly bad--but a good book can overcome a bad cover. However--this is not a romance, not even a dark one. The "relationship" between the two main characters is minimally developed and honestly inexplicable. Grizz isn't likeable, even when he's trying to be nice. There is horrific sexual and physical violence, most of which is covered in detached was, even when it's happening TO THE NARRATOR. It's all tell and no show. The entire story is also told in flashback, and is a period setting, both of which can be effective but in this instance serve to further remove the reader from the story. I gave up at 75 percent after forcing my way through, convinced that a thousand near-5 star reviews had to have something in common. If you read romance for the emotional connection and passion, this is not your book.

Nine Minutes The Nine Minutes Trilogy Volume 1 Beth Flynn 9781500473631 Books Reviews

So I have heard nothing but good things about Nine Minutes and people saying "Have you read Nine Minutes yet?" or "Nine Minutes is a must read." And I am so crazy swamped with other books I need to read. But I finally broke down and bought it so I could check out what all the hype was about this book. Now I have to say I so wanted to raving 5 star review about this book. But of course other books and real life have gotten in myour way and I have been sitting on my review for a month. A month where I have really thought about this book and what I was going to say in my review.

I have to give big props to this author on this book and it's plot. I think like most people what grabbed my attention the most was the prologue. It kept and held my attention and it made me wonder where this story could go.

Now I have to say I have mixed feelings about Ginny. I mean here is a young woman who climbs on the back of a stranger’s bike and is abducted. Now after arriving at this run down motel and realizing after a while that she has been abducted. She doesn't act like someone who has been kidnapped. She also really shows no emotions at all.

I would usually talk about the male lead here. But that is kind of hard for me to do. Because we really don't get to know Grizz. I mean sure we kind of get to know him through Ginny's eye's. We only really know that he's older, much older than Ginny. Also that he's supposed to be this kind of, not sure if I want to say "bad guy" in all this. But you never really see him do anything bad.

Now I want to say thinking over this book there were a couple of things that kind of bugged me about this book. First that it is only told in Ginny's POV, I mean I understand that she is retelling the story of what happened to her. But there really was no interactions between the characters. Except for a few here and there. It was more descriptive and how Ginny was feeling at the time. Also this was supposed to be or I thought this was supposed to be about Ginny and Grizz's relationship. But honestly where was the relationship between the two, it seemed as though they were barely together except at night when they were in the same room and bed. Also when I read a book I want to feel some kind of connection with the characters but I really felt none.

Also there was a Huge twist at the end that I wasn't expecting. Ok maybe I saw it coming. But not really sure if it was necessary or that I necessarily liked it.

So like I said at the top after sitting on this review for a month. Instead of my raving 5 star review, I'm only able to give this book 3 stars. But I am very interested in reading the next book Out of Time just to see how it ends.
I’ve had this book forever, but was too chicken to start it. Now that the rest of the series is on KU, I bit the bullet and read Nine. Oh my God....this book has me in knots. I don’t know if I’m heartbroken, angry, in love, nervous, or what?? My emotions are ALL over the place I tell you!

I cannot help but to weep for Grizz. I know I know, he’s a monster, criminal, etc etc but you know what? I don’t care!! I wanted him to live forever and have his HEA dang it! But I won’t spoil anything for you, who like me, waited an eternity to read this series....

Anyways, let me tell you that I was very surprised with the writing style in this book. It’s narrated in a first person format, but not like other books. I’m sure there’s a word for this style but I don’t know it so I’ll explain it... it’s like the narrator is telling us a story literally, in this book. Ginny describes every act as a memory. Like if my grandma were telling me a bedtime story. It’s still first person, but with inflections in the past, present and future. Don’t know if I’m making any sense, but my point is that it was different for me. But a good different. I loved it! I was enthralled in Ginny’s life and experiences. I couldn’t stop reading.

I actually liked that the sex wasn’t overtly described. It was mentioned but the author didn’t dwell on it. So that’s a reprieve. There is violence and horrible events described but it didn’t feel disturbing. Maybe it was the writing style, or I’m simply very twisted-minded and these things don’t really bother me...I don’t know. But the true story here was Grizz’s and Kit’s (ginny) love. I adored Grizz’s devotion to Kit. It was beautiful to see how bad he was with the rest of the world but for Kit he gave his own life.

I’m about to jump into the next book and I’m eager to see how the author is gonna make me love those characters as much as I love Grizz.
