Drawing on philosophers from Aristotle to Kuhn, this book builds a modern account of human purpose and explores the role of problem solving in life. This is what the critical armchair philosopher has been waiting for!
The author dissects the relationship between problem solving and a wide array of topics from technology to sexuality with a myriad of clever thought experiments and hard facts. Analytic philosophy is seen written in an exciting new style. You will never think of problems the same way again.

This is not a cutesy list of problem solving techniques. This is philosophy with a capital P!
While some sections like the alternatives were uncomfortably dense, the illustration and the argument was impossible to put down.
I see problems and solutions everywhere now.
I am not a frequenter of this genre, being mostly a novel reader, but I can't recommend it more. Also the whole purpose of life part sounded far fetched, but hang in there and you will be richly rewarded. It wasn't something that I had really thought about much but I feel like the question is resolved as far as I am concerned.

I give 2 stars so this comment is accepted.
Thank you.
This book is a complete waste of money and an insult to the reader. From the Preface page you run into gross misspelling, dropped words and rambling sentences that make no sense. It only gets worse thereafter.
I want to return this book. I am completely put off by the first dozen pages. The author seems to assume that his perspective is the only possible true and correct perspective. That is an incorrect perspective as far as I am concerned. Lots of fifty-cent words, many used incorrectly. Grammar and punctuation (and the lack thereof) require frequent rereading to figure out what the intent is. He praises his editor; I think he needs a real editor. There are many and far better books on dealing with "problems."
i never read philosophical books, but this one got me interested- what good is philosophy if it does not refer to your deepest questions, and some how bring you to resolve or a sense of peace- i am reading it again, it is more clear second time around-..)
This book was receded to me by a friend, saying I had to read it.
At first I did not know the heck it was about. The first chapters seemed to be put together in a funny sort of way.
The plan put out at the onset of the book seemed far reaching and Ill conceived.
The second section was great and redeemed my interest. I really enjoyed going through all the little activities in life from a problem solving perspective.
I don't know that I am entirely convinced that all of my life is problem solving activity. Having said that, I definitely see myself as more of a problem solver now.
The last part about humility and pride was thought provoking. I consider myself a proud humble person in that I don't think I am any better or worse than other folks. I wonder what other people thought about this section.
Overall good book. I little wordy. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who is curious about problem solving.
I didn't personally get much out of this book, it seems to create a subjective description of various dimensions of problem solving, but it never becomes clear to me what value that description is supposed to have for problem solving. The book carves up problems into a few different subjective dimensions width, depth, priority and number of subjects, based on how we experience them. That approach alone doesn't seem to me to shed a lot of light on problem solving. If there is a useful application of this approach, I was still missing it by the end of the book.
Very well argued and very useful did discussion-argument about the concept of "problem."
